Incubus Live in Boston with Coheed and Cambria

The past few years, 90’s bands have been reaching higher peaks than ever before. Third Eye Blind is selling out amphitheaters, Oasis just announced their reunion tour, and now Incubus nearly sold out their anniversary tour celebrating Morning View. Maybe the excitement was a bit of nostalgia but it was a Friday night in Boston and the spirit of everyone walking down Causeway was contagious.

For this anniversary stretch of shows, they were joined by Coheed and Cambria who hail from New York. It was a change of scenery for Coheed who usually find themselves on top of the bill. Their opening set was nine songs and they stacked the deck in their favor, playing riff-heavy picks “Ten Speed (Of God’s Blood and Burial)” which garnered roaring applause; eventually closing with “Welcome Home”.

Right from the moment Incubus took the stage, lights perfectly choreographed with the band’s movements turned on and the set kicked off with “Nice to Know You”.  With this being a Morning View playthrough tour it meant the set featured the mega hit “Wish You Were Here” early in the set when everyone was lively and still had their voices to sing along.

The crowd then settled down a bit with “Just a Phase” and “11 AM” followed by the band (and the audience) taking a seat for the acoustic version of “Blood on the Ground”. Each passing year we are more and more grateful for any venues that have a place to sit down. My back hurts!

Incubus were clearly here to have fun and didn’t shy away from interpolating their favorite songs into the album playthrough. Whether it was the masterfully crafted “In the Air Tonight” / “Are You In?” mashup or the comedic relief from singing Rihanna during “Under My Umbrella”, the audience sang along to every part. And why wouldn’t they?

After performing the entirety of Morning View, Incubus gathered at the top of the riser on stage and bowed before entering “the hits” portion of the night. Even if “the hits” portion of the set didn’t exist, we all would have been more than satisfied. Hearing that album in full was a bucket list item for the thousands of us in attendance. Though the band did get to share a couple more jokes with the audience by playing a cover of “Come Together”, they promised nothing but originals after that (except sneaking in a Portishead cover in the middle of “Vitamin”). Capping off this monumental night was the two biggest sing-alongs: “Dig” and “Drive”. To feel 20,000 people singing your songs back to you each night and breathing new life into them two decades later is beyond life affirming. Chances of a Morning View tour happening again in our lifetime are slim – we’d encourage everyone to pick up any remaining tickets HERE.
