The music community is in mourning following the tragic death of Talay Riley, a highly respected singer-songwriter whose work graced the discographies of global icons such as Dua Lipa, Britney Spears, and H.E.R. Riley, whose real name was Mark “Yinka” Orabiyi, passed away last week following a stabbing incident in East London. He was 35 years old.
A Tragic Loss in East London
According to an official statement released by the Metropolitan Police, Orabiyi was discovered in a garden with multiple stab wounds around 9 a.m. local time on Friday, June 5. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim, a man in his 20s, was also injured in the attack but sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation into the incident remains active. Authorities have arrested three individuals on suspicion of murder; however, two have been released with no further action, and one has been released on bail pending additional inquiries. A detective for the Metropolitan Police emphasized that the investigation “continues at pace” and has urged witnesses or those with security footage from the area to come forward.
A Prolific Career and Grammy Success
In a poignant statement shared via Instagram, Riley’s family and his manager, Cleo Amedume, confirmed the news. “Talay will fondly be remembered by those who knew him publicly for his incredible talent as a Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum-selling songwriter & artist,” the statement read. “For those that knew and loved him personally, it is his humor, generous spirit, and unmistakable presence that will be missed the most.”
Riley’s influence on modern pop and R&B was extensive. His songwriting credits include Dua Lipa’s 2016 breakout ‘Last Dance,’ Khalid’s global hit ‘Young Dumb & Broke,’ and H.E.R.’s ‘Lights On.’ His contribution to H.E.R.’s 2017 self-titled album earned him a Grammy Award when the project won Best R&B Album at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. His versatile talent also saw him collaborating with artists like Jessie J, Jason Derulo, Nick Jonas, and Britney Spears.
Legacy and Future Projects
Riley first rose to prominence in 2009 through his work with grime artist Chip (formerly Chipmunk), co-writing and featuring on the Top 10 single ‘Look for Me.’ While his songwriting career reached stratospheric heights, he remained a dedicated solo artist, releasing the mixtape Going to California in 2011 and consistently sharing new music online. Recent social media activity suggested he was preparing for the launch of a new studio album.
His recent professional output remained as prolific as ever. Riley contributed to Paloma Faith’s 2024 album, The Glorification of Sadness, and worked on upcoming projects for Kelela and Kehlani. He was also a key collaborator for the rising British girl group Flo, recently receiving a Grammy nomination for his work on their debut album, Access All Areas.
Tributes from the Music Community
Riley’s brother, Michael Orabiyi—the acclaimed songwriter and producer known as Scribz Riley—shared a moving tribute on social media. “He had one of the purest hearts I’ve ever known,” he wrote. “He loved deeply, gave freely, and touched countless people through his talent, kindness, and spirit. Your legacy will continue to live on through your music.”
The loss has resonated deeply across the industry, with tributes pouring in from peers and collaborators including Stormzy, Kehlani, Khalid, and Ella Mai, all of whom expressed their condolences and shared memories of Riley’s impact on their lives and careers.
