Irish post-punk outfit Fontaines D.C. have announced the death of their manager, Trevor Dietz, whom they have affectionately hailed as the “sixth member of the band.”
Dietz passed away on Sunday, June 7. While the band has confirmed the news, a cause of death has not yet been disclosed. In a heartfelt statement shared on Instagram, the group expressed their profound grief, noting that Dietz had been a constant presence throughout their entire career.
“We are utterly heartbroken to let you know that on Sunday June 7th we lost our dear friend and manager Trevor,” the band wrote. “Trevor was beside us from the beginning of our journey as a band, we have never known Fontaines D.C. without him, the sixth member of the band. He cared passionately for us and for what was fair and right in the wider world. He was fearless in his beliefs. We will miss him always.”
The band requested privacy for themselves and Dietz’s family during this difficult time. The announcement has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the music industry. The Lambrini Girls commented on the band’s post, stating, “Rest in peace, Trev. He went above and beyond for everyone and championed so many DIY bands, the impact he had is beyond measure.”
Other figures in the scene also shared their condolences, including Móglaí Bap of Kneecap, who wrote, “Suaimhneas síoraí Trev,” a Gaelic phrase translating to “rest in eternal peace.” Broadcaster Annie Mac also reached out, offering her love to the band and those closest to Dietz.
Dietz was instrumental in the early success of Fontaines D.C., having supported them during their formative years at The Workman’s Club in Dublin. In a 2021 interview with BIMM Dublin, he reflected on his initial meetings with the band, noting that he was drawn to their ambition and shared vision. “I wouldn’t have worked with the band if they hadn’t had huge expectations and huge dreams,” Dietz said at the time. “First and foremost, you need a band that shares your vision and who are reliable, accountable and honest.”
Fontaines D.C. are scheduled to return to the stage this summer, with a European tour beginning in Cadiz, Spain, on August 8, followed by their first-ever headline slot at the Reading & Leeds Festival.
