The Popdosemagazine Weekly Roundup is a column where our staff plugs a variety of new releases in a concise, streamlined format. Albums, singles, videos, and live sets. Check back each Monday to see what we were jamming the week prior.

Greet Death – “I Hate Everything”

“I Hate Everything” might be the calmest Greet Death song yet. Like the title suggests, it retains the band’s pessimism, but this time it’s wrapped up in a swaying, almost alt-country daze rather than the thick fuzz that defined New Hell. And who’d’ve known it was such a good look for the Michigan three-piece?

Julia Shapiro – “Death (XIII)”

Everyone needs to be paying attention to Julia Shapiro, and now is a good time to start since she just dropped a single for her new album Zorked (out October 15th) that is perfect for Spooktember. “Death (XIII)” was inspired by the Death tarot card and is droney, H E A V Y, dark shoegaze perfection. The video, directed by Chris Wade, fits the aural mood, built around a creepy crazed fan/stalker oozing with serial killer scariness. Shapiro is summoning enough eeriness to haunt a house and I am totally here for it.

Charlotte Cornfield – “Partner in Crime”

“I spilled a glass of water / The second that I met you,” Charlotte Cornfield sings over a thumping bass line and straightforward drumbeat to start “Partner in Crime.” Packed with pulled-from-life lyrics, the track is an ode to meeting a new person who lifts a weight from your soul. The simple chorus of “There was so much bad news / Before I met you” cuts deeper than you might think on first read and perfectly encapsulates the feelings of transformation and optimism that come with a new connection. Check out the Wes Anderson-themed video below.

She/Beast – “Fan Club Leader”

She/Beast is the solo project of Sweden’s Katja Nielsen (Arre Arre!), and her new single sounds like if a 60s girl group watched a bunch of B horror movies and came out stronger because of the grizzly movie marathon. Her upcoming album Violent Tendencies is a concept album of sorts, telling the stories of female murderers; “Fan Club Leader” is an actual bop about a fan shooting their idol, and it has enough pulp and garage pop panache to pull it off.

Super American – “RIP JEFF”

Super American’s new single finds the band at their most reflective. “RIP JEFF” is half lament for a dead enemy and half contemplation on mortality in general. It’s not the party-ready pop-punk of Tequila Sunrise, that’s for sure, but it’s a nice change of pace for the band.

Midnight Satire – “A.R.”

Midnight Satire’s single “A.R.” is an interesting blend of organic and electronic. The Orlando artist layers acoustic guitar and warm horns over vocal effects and Postal Service-esqe synths with a buildup that any emo fan would enjoy. It’s dream pop for a night drive, full of texture and drama.
