Between You and God – Born With No Dreams, into a World With No Hope
Following in the footsteps of Florida metalcore trailblazers Poison the Well and Shai Hulud, Jacksonville’s Between You and God go right for the throat on their debut EP Born With No Dreams, into a World With No Hope. They’re a bit less theatrical than some of their peers, even if they allow themselves some clean choruses now and then. It’s all done tastefully, but there’s a hunger to it that feels invigorating as this early 2000s sound remains one of the dominant strains of hardcore today.

Julez and the Rollerz – “Call Me Up”
“Call Me Up,” the new rocker from Julez and the Rollerz hits much of what worked on their EP Is This Where the Party Is? Badass guitars, playfully horny lyrics, and melodic bass lines abound, while the synth, tambourine, and backing vocals fill out the space richly to give the song a huge sound.

Creek – “See Through”
Creek’s new single is as ominous, foreboding, and hazy as the cover suggests. Like the best moments of last year’s Shortsighted, “See Through” recalls Balance and Composure or Daisyhead at their darkest, a mess of tense, fuzzy guitars and deathly shrieks.

partygirl – “clean”
Brooklyn rockers partygirl have dropped their second single off upcoming record im so charming, i forgot who i was. “clean” is a fuzzy, psychedelic jaunt that’s had many faces since 2017 when bandleader Pagona wrote it after a drunken night out. Overcome with nostalgia and yearning and the complexities of youth, the once lo-fi tune now beams after six years with the group’s influence. Taking on an introspective journey of change and the clarity of wanting to change, the splintered lyricism that rumbles under emotional, jazzy swells is a cathartic addition to partygirl’s already solid discography.

upsetting – Dog Bite Forever
On upsetting’s new full-length Dog Bite Forever, they synthesize all the previous iterations of themselves from the past half-decade. There’s a bit of emo here, a helping of post-hardcore, some gazey textures–it’s a nice mix, and Dog Bite Forever is at its best on songs like the anthemic “A Place to Be Alone” or the soaring and cathartic “Reaching for Stars (Without a Clue),” the songs where they’re all those things at once.
