The Alt Weekly Roundup (7/5)

The Alt Weekly Roundup (7/5)

Posted: by The Editor

The Popdosemagazine Weekly Roundup is a column where our staff plugs a variety of new releases in a concise, streamlined format. Albums, singles, videos, and live sets. Check back each Monday to see what we were jamming the week prior.

Golden Apples – “Garbage”

“Garbage,” the latest single from Golden Apples (fka Cherry) is a hazy, swirling indie rocker that establishes itself right away with a churning acoustic guitar driving the beat. Russell Edling’s laid back vocals float back in the mix, adding to the dreamy vibe of the track. It’s the second release off the upcoming full-length Shadowland, which should be worth your time if “Garbage” is any indication.

Adjy – The Idyll Opus (I-VI)

Adjy’s debut LP was half a decade in the making –– and worth every minute. The Idyll Opus (I-VI) is a 15-track, nearly 100-minute-long concept record that recalls variously Foxing, From Indian Lakes, Copeland, the sprawl of Genesis, the tenderness of Moving Mountains, the texture of Godspeed You!, and a million other bands. It’s a massive journey but it’s a beautiful listen and far more replayable than its length would suggest, and every listen uncovers something new.

Happypills – “ライトニング”

Japan’s Happypills new single “ライトニング” is a fuzzed out lo-fi tune with surf guitars and hazy vocals perfect for summer. The Fukuoka native is a prolific bedroom recording artist, and their new album is sure to have a great mix of dream pop, surf rock, and shoegaze. Plus it is always fun to find the cute little ghost with a crown that frequently shows up on his album art.

Catbite – “Call Your Bluff”

Philly ska rockers Catbite closed out the week with the release of “Call Your Bluff,” the first track off their upcoming excellent second record, Nice One. Mainly a hornless ska band, Catbite get their traditional-yet-modern sound through the classic organ tones, upstroked guitar, and relentless rhythm section. But what really sets Catbite apart is the vocal gymnastics of singer and keyboardist Brit Luna, and she and the rest of the band sound on top of their game on “Call Your Bluff.”

I Feel Fine – “Selfsame”

I’ve been following I Feel Fine for a while now, and it’s great to see them team up with Refresh Records. Especially since, by the sounds of first single “Selfsame,” their new record will be their best work yet. “Selfsame” is the most self-assured and refined that their blend of atmospheric math-emo has ever sounded.
