Runaway Brother has long been a favorite here at The Alternative. So, naturally, we’re stoked to premiere the band’s new (ish) single “Jumpin the Gunn (202x).” It’s the latest cut off their re-recording of Bedhead, their 2012 debut, following “Happy Happy New Year (202x).” It’s a lively update on the original cut, a fan favorite off Bedhead, retaining its charm with the wisdom of age.
Check out a Q&A with the band and stream the track below.
First off, why’d you decide to re-record Bedhead?
It’s been ten years since we had recorded Bedhead and we did all samples for the drums originally, due to not really having the means to do it in a studio or ourselves yet. So with Ian Phillips, who had been playing drums and recording with us essentially since we released Bedhead, after playing these songs for years, the songs evolved and we wanted them to be more organically recorded.
Which rerecording(s) are you most proud of?
We really like them all a lot so it’s hard to choose one! I am very happy with how “Happy Happy New Year” turned out as well as “Jumpin the Gunn Neurotic.” It was really difficult to redo or “top” certain things so we chose to instead perform them how we would today or effect them a more diverse way. I think songs like “My Friends” and “We Don’t Have to Go Home Anymore” benefit a lot from the live drum sound. Our voices have also improved and we got to have Ian Lee (bass/vocals) sing harmonies and other parts on these new recordings too.
What are your plans for the rest of 2023?
We’re going to be hitting the road again in June! We’re hoping to release the rest of the Bedhead X re-recordings around then and a little further down the road some new music we’ve been working together on for a little bit now.
