Photography + Review: M83 and Jeremiah Chiu

Posted: by The Editor

Lately, we’ve been washing away reality with M83’s latest release Fantasy and were excited to hear it live – this past Sunday, we caught their sold out show in Boston.

Jeremiah Chiu opened for this tour and took the stage with nothing but a suitcase full of synths. He spent his time on stage engulfing the audience in immaculate soundscapes and ambient waves reminiscent of video game soundtracks.

M83 immediately started off with five songs from Fantasy as the 3,500 in attendance started to feel their worries wash away. While drugs may have helped induce this trance in some (we at The Alternative were offered some a few times and politely declined), M83’s roaring synths, stacked reverb guitars, and live percussion continued to pull the audience further into the world they were building with each song with a beautiful light show to accompany it. As the night progressed, we heard hits from previous releases such as “Wait” (for all our The Fault in Our Stars fans), “Teen Angst” for the first time since 2013, and “*” for the first time since 2009. After a monstrous twenty song setlist that spanned their entire discography, M83 briefly left the stage for a break before coming back for an encore. A perfect encore of “Midnight City”, “Mirror”, and “Outro” closed out the night. This tour will be talked about for years to come and is not one you will want to miss – tickets for remaining dates can be found HERE. Our photographer Kyle captured this immersive performance – check out their pictures from the night below while you stream Fantasy.
