When Broken Hearts Are Blue formed nearly 30 years ago, they were a scrappy emo band out of Kalamazoo, MI, in the mold of Texas Is the Reason or Braid. They dropped one album, 1997’s The Truth About Love, before breaking up. That album’s become something of a cult classic in emo circles (even by the standards of emo circles). The story could’ve ended there, but the band reunited 20 years later to record a few songs they’d written after their LP. That sparked something, and it led to 2020’s Goodbye Bunny Smith EP and a second full-length, titled Dark Whimsy & Soft Surrealism, in 2022.
And now they’re prepping their third album. Meeting Themselves is out next month, and we’ve got an exclusive premiere of the lead single “The French Major,” and of its video. Now, it’s been a long time since The Truth About Love, and the band’s not interested in retreading the past. Like their contemporaries Leiah, they’ve long since moved past emo, and they’ve settled instead into a jangly, catchy indie rock sound, smooth and light as the breeze in spring. “The French Major” is languorous and laid-back, drifting like cigarette smoke at its own pace. It’s a great song, and it’s a stately evolution of where Broken Hearts Are Blue has been heading since they began writing new material.
