The global film community is in mourning following the announcement that Sam Neill dies at the age of 78. The legendary actor, immortalized by his role as Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, passed away Monday in Sydney, Australia, surrounded by his loved ones.

It is with immense sadness that the whānau (family) of Sam Neill share the news of his passing. Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life.

The family further noted that while his death was sudden and unexpected, Neill had remained cancer-free following a well-documented battle with the disease. They expressed deep gratitude to the staff at St. Vincent’s Private Hospital for their compassionate care during his final days.

Born in Northern Ireland in 1947 and raised in New Zealand, Neill’s career spanned more than half a century. He achieved global superstardom in 1993’s Jurassic Park, a role he reprised with equal gravitas in Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World: Dominion. His ability to blend intellectual curiosity with rugged heroism made Dr. Alan Grant one of cinema’s most enduring figures.

Beyond the realm of blockbusters, Neill was a versatile performer who excelled in diverse roles, from the psychological depth of Memoirs of an Invisible Man to the menacing authority of Inspector Chester Campbell in Peaky Blinders. His recent work included Apples Never Fall, Untamed, and The Twelve. He is also set to appear posthumously in the 2027 release Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.
