Charli XCX Clarifies "Dance Floor Is Dead" Lyric and the Future of Electronic Music

Charli XCX has officially addressed the discourse surrounding the provocative opening line of her recent single, “Rock Music.” The lyric, which declares, “I think the dance floor is dead / So now we’re making rock music,” sparked significant debate across the music industry, even drawing a public response from pop icon Madonna.

Responding to the lyric on Instagram, Madonna suggested that if a dance floor feels dead, it might be a reflection of the music being played. However, in a recent cover story for Rolling Stone UK, Charli XCX clarified that the sentiment was never intended as a critique of the electronic music scene at large.

“That lyric is very much about my relationship with Brat, and my personal experience with that album,” she explained, emphasizing that the line was a reflection of her internal creative process rather than a commentary on the state of the industry.

Far from believing the genre is in decline, Charli XCX insisted that dance music is currently thriving. She pointed to the work of her husband, George Daniel, who operates the dance-music label dh2, as evidence of the genre’s vitality. She also highlighted several contemporary artists who are pushing the boundaries of the electronic space.

“There’s been such a wealth of incredible dance/electronic-adjacent records that have been coming out recently, whether it’s Slayyyter or underscores or PinkPantheress,” she noted. “Dance music is in an incredible place.”

The singer also took the opportunity to dispel rumors regarding a total shift in her musical identity. While “Rock Music” explored new sonic territories, she clarified that she is not pivoting to a traditional rock sound. “Obviously, I know that there’s been a lot of conversation around me making a rock album, which is something that I never said,” she stated. “I’ve never thought about genre in a binary way.”

As fans look forward to her next chapter, Charli XCX is preparing for the release of her highly anticipated new album, Music, Fashion, Film, scheduled for July 24.
