It’s March 2023. March 31st specifically and it’s release day of Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness’ latest album, Tilt at the Wind No More. March 31st was also a special day as Andrew McMahon performed at Chain Reaction in Anaheim, California. Chain Reaction has played a role in his career as his band, Something Corporate played there throughout their history. For some fans in attendance, this wasn’t their first time seeing him perform there, but it was the first time for other fans, including me.
This was not the first time I had seen Andrew or any of his bands play in a small space, but still I knew that it would be a special night as we got treated to hearing Tilt at the Wind No More played live in its entirety, including the previously released singles, “Lying on the Hood of Your Car”, “Nobody Tells You When You’re Young”, and “VHS”. While the album had just been out for 24 hours, it felt like it had been out for much longer as people sang along to the music. Of course, we knew that an Andrew show wouldn’t be complete without hearing songs from the Something Corporate, Jack’s Mannequin, or the rest of the AMITW discographies. We got treated to songs such as “I Woke Up In A Car” and “Hurricane” by Something Corporate, “The Resolution” and “La La Lie” by Jack’s Mannequin, and “Fire Escape” and “Cecilia and the Satellite” by Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness. I have to say that my favorite moment of the night was hearing “Punk Rock Princess” by Something Corporate as that moment reminded me a lot about the music video the band filmed back in 2002. I’m not one to use this phrase a lot, but you just had to be there.
