New Jersey punks Banquets have been gone for a long time, but no more. The band is gearing up to release their first album in a decade next month, and they’ve already previewed it with “Episodes.” Today we’re excited to bring you an exclusive premiere of the second single from Petty Relics and its video. “Who Will Inherit Us?” is exactly the kind of fast-paced melodic punk rock Banquets did so well back in the early 2010s. If you miss the days of Leavetaking, Chamberlain Waits, Hostage Calm, and Cande Ru Las Degas, “Who Will Inherit Us?” is exactly what you’ve been looking for.
The band shares
“Who Will Inherit Us?” was the first song written in the collection of songs that make up Petty Relics. At the time my wife and I had just accepted the fact that parenthood was not in the cards for us. While we made peace with this reality, and even before this, I find myself often think of the future ahead. Who will be there when we inevitably can no longer care for each other? Who tends to the thing that we leave behind? What becomes of our remnants and the relics that mean so much to us, but are mere trash to those that unknowingly inherit it? When putting together the video with Eric Lutz, we really wanted to tie in the concepts of Petty Relics. In many ways the physical things we own, or attach memories to, tend to define us. While we want to leave the memories and mementos to who comes next, there is an impossible weight that gets lost in a lack of context and perspective.
Listen to “Who Will Inherit Us?” below.
Petty Relics is out October 17th via Black Numbers.
