“Everything is cringe!” The Sonder Bombs, Cleveland’s own indie agitators, lean into this declaration until its disconcerting reality turns liberating. The band repeats this sentiment over and over (32 times to be exact–sandwiching their observations between this mantra) distorted and heckled with background laughs and snipes, until the word itself curdles into static. The punchline: “They say to kill the cringe within you / But I say to kill the part of you that cringes.”
As an artist, I couldn’t agree more. We exist in a world where if we show too much excitement, we’re branded as embarrassing. This is just further illustrated by a minor creeping piano scale in this track that accentuates the refrain, kind of like the chill that runs up and down my spine whenever I post something a little “too vulnerable” online. Anyway, do give this a listen–and if you think this song is cringe, congratulations: you’re in on the joke.
