The Alt Weekly Roundup (9/6)

The Alt Weekly Roundup (9/6)

Posted: by The Editor

The Popdosemagazine Weekly Roundup is a column where our staff plugs a variety of new releases in a concise, streamlined format. Albums, singles, videos, and live sets. Check back each Monday to see what we were jamming the week prior.

Swimming – “Sometimes Things Change”

“Sometimes Things Change” is almost as long as the EP Swimming put out earlier this year, and it’s just as good. The band remains one of the freshest and most interesting bands in the emo sphere, and there’s no doubt in my mind their debut LP will be a gamechanger (whenever it drops).

Common Sage – “Fall Down”

Common Sage just dropped a new album (It Lives and It Breathes) on No Sleep Records, and “Fall Down” is my favorite song. It’s a noisy, clangy, basement-show-blister of a track that leans into its ‘90s era underground heritage while still sounding fresh. This is definitely a song that was born to be heard live.

Gulfer – “Neighbours”

With their whirring, technical math rock sound, Montreal’s Gulfer are one of the most exciting emo-adjacent bands in the game. Their rollicking one-off single, “Neighbours,” absolutely whips, with its tapped guitar riffing and half time drum groove. “I sit around and avoid all of these holes inside the wall / They evoke all of these ghosts trapped on the other side,” frontperson Vincent Ford sings in an Avey Tare-esque bellow.

Gardenhead Records – Sunrise Music

The new Gardenhead Records comp has exclusive tracks from some of the Alt’s favorites –– Harmony Woods, Another Michael, and 2nd Grade contribute songs, among others. It’s only $10 for all 57 songs, which is an incredible deal even without mentioning that half of all the profits go to the Sunrise Movement.

Chet Wasted – Raspberry

I am a sucker for anything Beach-Boys-esque, and Chet Wasted’s Raspberry captures that vintage sun drenched vibe without being derivative. How Jacob McCabe (of Perspective, a Lovely Hand to Hold) somehow channeled haunting surf music all the way in Michigan and mixed it with indie sensibilities I don’t know. But maybe if I listen a few more times, I’ll figure it out.

Shy, Low – “The Beacon”

Shy, Low’s four-year silence has been hard to take, but thankfully it’s all coming to a close. “The Beacon” is the second single off the band’s upcoming LP Snake Behind the Sun, out next month. It’s their first for post-rock powerhouse Pelagic Records, and after the soaring “The Beacon,” it’s sure to be a stunner.
