Grasser – “Who Do I See”
The bass line of “Who Do I See,” the new single from Grasser, is funky alt-pop that seems ready made for alternative radio. Opening with a groovy baseline, it continuously layers horns and hi-hats over the track, jumping between near distortion to a jangly, 2010s-inspired sound.

Highschool – “Sirens”
Melbourne band Highschool just dropped a new single for their upcoming EP, and it is full of dark jangle pop goodness. The video was shot partially at the (obviously haunted) Ararat Psychiatric Hospital and is chockablock with gothic horror eeriness, so if you are as ready for spooky time as I am it might make you dig out your Halloween decorations early.

Lunarette – Clair De Lunarette
Lunarette’s Clair De Lunarette EP didn’t get the attention it deserved, but hopefully their new single will. “Tangerine Spritz” doubles down on both the dreamy and poppy parts of the dream pop of their debut, expanding their sound in exciting new ways.

Church Girls – “Separated”
Everything that made Church Girls’ 2020 record The Haunt such a fascinating listen shows up on the group’s latest track. “Separated” features freewheeling guitars, lyrics laden with landmarks, and an aggressive but tight rhythm section. Church Girls sound on top of their game as the song grows into a ripping guitar solo, taking the track to a new level of intensity.

See Through Person – “Pipe Dream”
On the first single from their second EP, See Through Person reveal themselves to be heavier, tighter, and more melodic than they might have led us to believe on their December debut Chariot. “Pipe Dream” is frantic and jarring, the guitars having some strange effect of jittering from one end of the room to the other while also continuously landing with a heavy thud. It absolutely rips. The Ft. Meyers, Florida, band will release their new EP Sun on August 31.

5ever – “Champagne”
5ever appeared on my feed out of thin air this week, with multiple friends and collaborators singing the praise of their first single “Champagne.” It’s experimental-pop with a touch of adolescent, Warped-Tour-style-angst; you can feel the line “Have you ever considered that the world ain’t on your side this time” in your chest.

Sad Park – “Stuck”
Sad Park’s latest single is a scrappy punk screamer about the frustration of things not working out no matter how hard you try, and it is short and sticky enough that I pushed play again as soon as it ended. Crunchy bass, crashing drums, and concrete lyrics are all beat-your-steering-wheel worthy, but what really got me were the guitar runs: one surfable wave of riffs after another hit me, and I was happy to be along for the ride.

Save Face – “Glitter”
In retrospect, Save Face’s decision to cover My Chemical Romance’s “Teenagers” on their split with Graduating Life makes a lot of sense. “Glitter,” the first glimpse into their upcoming album, taps that same kind of theatrical post-hardcore that made MCR so beloved, and they knock it out of the park.

Dazy – MAXIMUMBLASTSUPERLOUD: The First 24 Songs
James Goodson has been putting up singles and EPs of catchy, fuzzed-out rockers under the moniker of Dazy on Bandcamp for the last year. This past week, he collected all of the tracks, added five new ones, and put them all together on one tape compilation MAXIMUMBLASTSUPERLOUD: The First 24 Songs. With most songs hovering around two minutes, they’re bitesized and fun as hell. I’ll definitely have the tape on repeat in the coming months.
