Letterpress – “Spin on a Daydream”
Letterpress’s new single “Spin on a Daydream” is a symphonic take on ‘90s emoo. Between Chrissy Erhayel’s crystalline, soaring voice and the riffs that snap like fallen leaves under boots, a violin flits in and out, giving the song an elegant feel.

Field of View – Field of View
Chattanooga, Tennessee, melodic hardcore band Field of View take clear inspiration from bands like Title Fight and Anxious, but they twist the style into something catchier, more immediate. But don’t think they can’t get heavy–the breathless gang vocal hook of “Mess” is a kick in the teeth.

Force of Denial – Times of Strife
Force of Denial grabs from the energetic metallic hardcore prevalent in the ‘90s. The album art seems ripped from that time, a large X standing out clearly. But you can see some individual flourishes, such as the chorus embedded within “Plea for Reason.” It’s an update on a very specific form of hardcore that feels evergreen.

Gabe ‘Nandez – H.T. III (Deluxe)
H.T. III is Gabe ‘Nandez’s second LP of 2023, and with the newly released deluxe edition it feels like a whole new album. ‘Nandez more than doubles the number of songs on the album, up to a grand total of twenty-one, and the tracklist is rearranged. Some of the best new cuts include the twinkling “Pythia,” the soulful “Hades,” and “Arbalest,” which features the excellent Brainorchestra.

Glazed Eyes – “Holding Out on a Dream”
Glazed Eyes’ tape from late this summer was a nice little surprise, but they’re back with an even nicer surprise—they’re dropping a full-length next month. The three songs that comprise that promo are included on Holding Out on a Dream, and they’ve just released the title track, maybe their best song yet, a summer-ready anthem that should win over fans of bands like Lemonheads and Teenage Fanclub.

No Cure – The Commitment to Permanence
No Cure’s caustic The Commitment to Permanence is the Alabama heavy hardcore band’s finest half-hour yet. It’s their nastiest, most vicious work to date, seven tracks to break your nose to. But there’s love in their violence: “No Cure Straight Edge Die Slow Fuck You” is a lament for the people affected by the outward ripples of drunk driving, and the metallic “Slumped in the House of God” is a revenge fantasy against priests who use their positions to abuse.
