We’ve been following Suburban Eyes since their debut single. The trio is made up three veterans of the emo scene–Christie Front Drive’s Eric Richter, Mineral’s Jeremy Gomez, and Boys Life’s John Anderson–but don’t expect Suburban Eyes to retread the glory days of the 1990s. Gomez produced their upcoming self-titled LP, while they tapped Peter Katis–known for his work with The National and Death Cab for Cutie–to mix it, which is a better idea of what to expect. Their new single “Floyd” is their best yet, and we’re excited to offer an exclusive premiere of the track. It’s a great example of the airy, feathery indie rock of Suburban Eyes.
Speaking of “Floyd,” Anderson shares:
Eric’s original demo had something like four abruptly changing sections that made for an interesting challenge when tracking drums. I ended up approaching the song with a book end tempo idea that gradually increases throughout to ultimately end on the same BPM as it begins. I brought in Dustin Kinsey from The Get Up Kids to add some Bill Evans-inspired piano arrangements. When Jeremy put together the first mix with just drums and piano at the top, I knew we had something really interesting happening. “Floyd” feels like a journey through the four seasons to me.
Richter notes that, lyrically, the single “is a collection of memories from the 19 amazing years I lived in New York City,” and Gomez adds, “It took a minute for me to wrap my head around the demo that Eric recorded because of the fact that it was changing sections and tempos every minute or so. I don’t recall but I think we might have extended one or two of them to keep it from sounding too schizophrenic. It came together nicely, though. I got to play the hammer dulcimer on it too.”
Suburban Eyes is out August 30th on Spartan Records.
