This May, Oakland’s Hectorine will release her third full-length Arrow of Love in May, and it tackles some big questions. Written and recorded in the aftermath of songwriter Sarah Gagnon’s losing her job and ending a relationship—”trials and tribulations,” she saysthe record tells a story of death and rebirth set to gentle, ’70s-inspired soft rock. Gagnon cites Fleetwood Mac, Leonard Cohen, and Peter Gabriel as touchstones for the sound of Arrow of Love, airy pop that contrasts with the lyrical inspiration: “so many fires” and “so much fear.”

That fear does come across on the album’s lead single, opener “Is Love an Illusion?” but it never feels overwhelming. Gagnon’s voice is steady and the music behind her is unobtrusive without sounding dispensable. It’s a lovely track, and we’re excited to premiere both the song and its video before tomorrow’s wide release. Check out the new Hectorine single exclusively below.

Arrow of Love is out May 23rd.
