Australian producer Ninajirachi entered the public consciousness back in 2017, when her debut track “Pure Luck” (with Fraya Staer) became the second-most-played song of the year on Australia’s tastemaking radio station triple j.
Since then, the producer has stayed mega-productive, co-producing the anthem for the 2019 Women’s World Cup with producer supergroup The Matildas, beaming worldwide with a mix on BBC Radio 1’s Diplo and Friends series, producing official remixes for artists including Anna Lunoe and Flight Facilities, touring with Crooked Colours, Hermitude and What So Not, playing Australia’s biggest music festival Splendour in the Grass and signing with Nina Las Vegas‘ NLV Records, where she released her debut EP last year.
Not bad, for only 20 years old.
Ninajirachi continues this hot streak with her latest single, “Cut the Rope.” Out via NLV Records and debuting exclusively on Billboard Dance, the song is an urgently shimmery and sleekly futuristic banger with a glitchy breakdown as memorable as the melody. Ninajirachi started work on “Cut the Rope” when she was spending time in America last year then finished it thousands of miles away while staying on a friend’s farm on the Australian island of Tasmania, an experience she calls “really gorgeous and special.”
“I usually never work this way,” the producer tells Billboard Dance of this drawn-out production process, “but I had been thinking about making a song called ‘Cut The Rope’ for a while before I sat down and wrote something. Often the title comes later, but that wasn’t the case here.”
