New Music Friday: Kim Petras has been on the coconut liqueur

Kim Petras is a new wave of pop star. The German singer-songwriter relocated to Los Angeles to follow her dream of sun-soaked melodies and euphoric hooks that could hear her at the top of the charts.  Following the viral success of ‘I Don’t Want It At All’, ‘Heart To Break’, her collaborations with Charli XCX and Cheat Codes, and a whole lot of critical praise, Petras is truly on the path for that reality. Her second single of 2020 is a return to her euphoric pop roots after a bit of a moody electronica experimentation. ‘Malibu’ is the summer anthem you have been waiting for to whisk you away from the reality of isolation. It’s an upbeat, feel good song about falling head over heels for someone. Comparing the tingling feeling of falling to the euphoric sensation that Malibu brings with it’s warmth and sunny rays, she has you immediately imagining those beautiful beaches and sun soaked days.  “And all your kisses taste like Malibu” she sings during the euphoric hook before confessing “I’m melting, I’m melting into you” during the post-chorus.  The 80’s tinged synths mix a pure nostalgia with a unique pop freshness that deserves to be embraced on mainstream radio.

It’s such a feel good track that erupts with positivity and genuine happiness. Even if you aren’t in love at the moment you can’t help but feel a little giddy when listening to this bonafide banger.
