This past Saturday, Minus the Bear played live in Boston. This show marked their return to the city, exactly seven years since their farewell tour stop in 2018 except this time playing a venue double the size. So much has changed since then, yet so much is still the same, and Minus the Bear’s ability to deliver is a constant.
Instead of easing back into the public eye, Minus the Bear came back with a bang and decided to play Menos El Oso in full for the 20th anniversary of the album. To be clear, a normal setlist would have attracted the same level of attendance, and this isn’t a nostalgia trip. It’s a flawless record that stands the test of time, much like the rest of Minus the Bear’s discography. The technicality of their playing doesn’t set in fully until you see it live; between David tapping both hands and feet in different rhythms to make his noises on his guitar previously unheard of, Jake singing in time with Joshua’s start-stop-start again drumming, and the entire band simply never missing a beat (literally), it truly highlights how much effort this band puts into their craft.
After powering through Menos El Oso front to back, there was no hesitation jumping into the second set of the night. This was nothing short of a marathon of every hit not yet played. Venturing all the way back to the beginning with “Get Me Naked 2: Electric Boogaloo”, and “Absinthe Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse”, hitting the later discography stops with “Into the Mirror”, and ending with “Knights”, every part of the band’s musicianship continued to shine while fans got to witness their favorite band for the first time in seven years. Boston marked the final date of the first leg of the tour but dates for leg two are still on sale HERE.
