Admit it: When you think about the Titanic, you think about Titanic. How could you not?
Two people who will forever be associated with the classic 1997 film: Director James Cameron — who’s also done other incredible blockbusters like Terminator 2: Judgment Day, True Lies, and Avatar — and actor Kate Winslet, who became a household name practically overnight because of Titanic.
OK, so: Back in 1998, Kate gave an interview to Rolling Stone in which she said, “I would only work for Jim Cameron again for a lot of money.” The profile also claimed that Kate had said “harrowing near-drownings, and lots and lots of yelling” took place on set.
As time went on, Kate’s remarks were taken to be indicative of a feud between her and James as a result of working on the film together. But now, both of them are clearing the air.
“There was never a rift between us,” James told Variety in a profile of Kate. “She had a little postpartum depression when she let go of Rose. She and I have talked about the fact that she goes really, really deep, and her characters leave a lasting, sometimes dramatic impression on her.”
“There’s a part of me that feels almost sad that stupid, speculative Titanic stuff at the time overshadowed the actual relationship I have with him,” Kate added when talking about her standing with James.
“He knows I will be up for anything. Any challenge, any piece of direction you give me? I’ll try it.”
Now, it shouldn’t be any surprise that all is well between the two. Kate, after all, appeared in James’s latest, Avatar: the Way of Water from 2022. (Yes, that’s her below, as Ronal.)
And in the profile, James also confirms that Kate’s returning for Avatar 3, which is scheduled for release next year. “I’m in the cutting room now, and I work with her performance every day,” he said.
