On Friday, August 2, we got the chance to see the Justice live in Boston in support of their new album, Hyperdrama. The acclaimed electronic duo, Justice, made their grand return to touring this year with top billing at Coachella after taking the previous year off. Their break and the release of their first album in six years called for a complete overhaul of their live set.
A Friday night in Boston typically calls for drunken bar crawls and rowdy twenty-somethings yelling in the street, but many were eagerly trying to beat the heat before the show. With MGM Music Hall’s five-thousand capacity, many attendees for this almost sold out show packed in right after doors opened. Lines for merch wrapped around the balcony in minutes. Those who didn’t want to hold their shirts and records all night moved into the main hall for a DJ set from Braxe + Falcon. Both wearing huge smiles as they walked on stage, they played the latest electronic hits and other classics that had the crowd dancing with each other. Their charismatic personas made for an excellent opener.
In a world of electronic artists pressing the play button on stage, Justice proved they were in their own league. The electronic duo quietly manned their stations as the surrounding ring of lights began flashing in synchronicity with the beat. Then their fresh pressed white suits were illuminated. The duo began live mixing their songs “Genesis”, “Phantom”, and “Phantom, PT II” while the array of lights began to rise around them and form their signature Cross logo. The line of subwoofers in front of the stage began to put showgoers in a bass induced trance as “Generator” started playing.
By the middle of the set when “Neverender” started playing, the entire GA crowd was meshing together as if they were long time friends. Everyone in the balcony seats was up and out of their seats and made the most of their tightly packed rows. People who dressed up for the night had turned on their light up sunglasses and shoes so they could rave as if it was their last night on earth. The continuous flashing lights perfectly on beat with their live mixing had everyone’s adrenaline spiking. It felt like we were in the concert fight scene from John Wick 2 but a parallel universe where Keanu Reeves was raving with us, not against us.
After an exhilarating 13 song set, Justice walked off stage while overwhelming amounts of clapping roared from the audience. After a few minutes of cheers for one more song, they came back for their encore. The duo then played “D.A.N.C.E” before walking into the crowd to high five and thank everyone for coming out. This show is an excellent way to spend your evening and remaining tickets can be found HERE. We hope to see Justice come back soon!
