Hovvdy, the Austin, Texas-based indie rock duo of Charlie Martin and Will Taylor, joined onstage by bass player Bennett Littlejohn and drummer Mark Edlin, played an energetic and passionate set opening up for Beabadoobee at the historic Met Philadelphia on September 8th. At the end of April this year, Hovvdy released their self-titled 5th album. They played a few highlights from this album including ‘Make Ya Proud’, a heartfelt song which Charlie said was about his grandfather, along with ‘Forever’, a sweet love song where he sings ‘Goddamn, I swear I will always love you/ Yeah I’ll fall forever’. They also played ‘Jean’ off the most recent album, as well as a few deeper cuts like ‘Junior Day League’ and the set highlight ‘Blindsided’ off of their 2021 release True Love. In addition, they sang one song from a 2018 release, Cranberry, ‘In The Sun’. Charlie and Will traded off singing on some songs while harmonizing on others. Their calm yet emotional music resonated well with the younger audience. They played in front of a simple backdrop with changing colors, purple, a warm yellow, and grey.
Hovvdy has been an active band for many years, with their first release in 2014. This was the first date of their tour with Beabadobee and they seemed grateful and happy to be there. This show was sold out and in a beautiful theater, with a capacity of 3,500 people. Hovvdy’s set was somewhat brief because they were an opener, but they managed to charm Beabadobee’s audience with their cheerful and honest demeanor and catchy, sincere songs. They finished up their set with an older song, the title track from their release ‘True Love’ , in which Charlie repeats at the end, ‘Do you believe what I said? That I’m the man I say I am?’ It would not be surprising to see Hovvdy get more and more attention after a larger tour like this, and they deserve it wholeheartedly.
