Blaqk Audio are not afraid to wear their influences on their sleeve. You earn that rite of passage when you cover The Cure in front of Robert Smith and get him to crack a smile. We caught the new wave electronic two-piece, consisting of Davey Havok and Jade Puget, on tour with the goth rock heavy hitters The Sisters of Mercy just after finishing an A.F.I. tour with Thirty Seconds to Mars—as if they exist as their own yin and yang.
Davey Havok has never shied away from making his appearance a part of the show. Coming onto the stage dressed in a full sparkling glitter suit, it was as if we were stepping back into the ’80s. Right from the start of their set, he was front and center on the stage connecting with audience members who were more than enthusiastic to be there. A fan even tossed a rose on stage that Davey placed behind his ear for the remainder of the set. Jade remained quietly behind his DJ booth, a “Blaqk Audio” banner hung across the front, and kept everything in control. This included mixing live across three laptops and controlling their perfectly timed light show. The two-piece clearly knows how to curate an experience.
When you’re given only 40 minutes to make a lasting impression, every song counts. Each perfectly curated song of their setlist showed what Blaqk Audio stood for and what they were capable of. From the heavily goth-inspired “Dark Times at the Berlin Wall” to the borderline dance club anthem “First to Love,” not a second was wasted. By the look on everyone’s faces, even those who just came for The Sisters of Mercy were won over by the duo’s ability to fully play the part of an ’80s band. Davey proudly expressed his gratitude to be on tour with such a formative band to him and Blaqk Audio’s existence before ending their set with “First to Love.” We sincerely hope we get a headline tour from Blaqk Audio soon that digs further into their discography and hope to see new fans earned from this tour there. Until then, we encourage you to grab a ticket to the remaining dates with The Sisters of Mercy HERE.
