The Alternative Weekly Roundup is a column where our staff plugs a variety of new releases in a concise, streamlined format. Albums, singles, videos, and live sets. Check back each Monday to see what we were jamming the week prior.
Pupil Slicer – “No Temple”
Pupil Slicer has been describing their new single “No Temple” as “the heaviest song we’ve ever written,” and that’s all you need to know. At no point over the song’s four and a half minutes does the trio come up for air, and when the song slows down in its final minute, it’s only so it can come back even heavier.

Stolen Jars – “Reality TV”
Stolen Jars’ “Reality TV” continues the group’s impressive run of singles this year in the lead-up to the release of their new record this August. Lyrically, the tune follows a refusal to fall in love that slowly turns into acceptance told overtop some choppy guitar lines and drums that are just busy enough to push the track’s swirling, spiraling feel that echoes the lyrics about slipping into love.

Temple of Angels – “Tangled in Joy”
On “Tangled in Joy,” the first single from Temple of Angels’ upcoming debut LP Endless Pursuit (out in June on Run for Cover), the Texas band is ready for their moment in the sun. The track is aptly named; it’s the wrapped in blissful reverb and Bre Morell (also of crushed) turns in her most radiant, elastic vocal performance to date. It’s a gorgeous song perfect for spring sunrises.

Giveaway – “Shoulders”
“Shoulders,” the new single from Giveaway, is two and a half minutes of upward momentum. Each new verse leaps higher and higher until its stratospheric final chorus brings everything crashing down. It’s the first song they band’s put out since their three-track debut in 2021, and it’s the best yet.

Twin Princess – “Allston”
On “Allston,” Twin Princess pairs some futuristic synth lines feeling like they’re bathed in neon light and smoke machines with a light hook that instantly gets under your skin in the best way. It’s a track that manages to feel wrapped in both doom and joy—a portentous party, but a party nonetheless.

redveil – “captain”
On playing w/ fire, the new EP from redveil, he makes a case that he’s the most underrated rapper going. On the bombastic, noisy “captain,” he makes his closing argument. It’s a break from the soulful, jazzy hip-hop that typified his ‘22 LP learn2swim, and it reveals him to be a singularly versatile presence in rap.

Heavenward – “Gasoline”
“Gasoline” is the most anthemic song Heavenward’s ever put out. The first single off the project’s upcoming debut LP Pyrophonics due out in June, it’s an appropriate first taste of where the record goes: it’s cleaner and catchier than any other Heavenward song to date, and it’s one of the best.
