Mitch Winehouse Loses High Court Battle Over Daughter's Estate Items

Mitch Winehouse, acting as the administrator of the estate of his late daughter, Amy Winehouse, has lost a High Court claim against two of the singer’s former friends. The legal battle centered on the sale of various personal items that had belonged to the iconic artist.

Mr. Winehouse had alleged that the singer’s former stylist, Naomi Parry, and her friend, Catriona Gourlay, had profited from the sale of dozens of items at auctions held in the United States in 2021 and 2023. His legal team argued that the women had deliberately concealed the sales, suggesting that the court proceedings were the only way to obtain clarity regarding the estate’s assets.

Both Ms. Parry and Ms. Gourlay denied the allegations, maintaining that the items in question were either gifts from the singer—who passed away in 2011—or were already their personal property.

In her judgment delivered on April 20, Deputy High Court judge Sarah Clarke KC ruled in favor of the defendants. She stated, “I find that neither Ms. Parry nor Ms. Gourlay deliberately concealed any of their disputed items from the claimant and even if I am wrong about that, Mr. Winehouse could have discovered what disputed items the defendants had with reasonable diligence.”

The court proceedings were marked by intense personal friction. During the trial, lawyers for Ms. Parry suggested that the claim was motivated by “petty jealousy,” an assertion Mr. Winehouse denied. He testified that he had expected proceeds from the 2021 auction to be distributed among himself, the singer’s mother, Janis, and the Amy Winehouse Foundation.

Among the items sold by Ms. Parry was a silk mini-dress worn by the singer during her final performance in Belgrade, which fetched 243,200 dollars. Ms. Parry testified that Mr. Winehouse had previously offered her 250,000 dollars to settle the dispute, a proposal she rejected, stating she would “rather set the money on fire than give him a penny.”

Judge Clarke characterized Mr. Winehouse as a “strong character” who has been deeply affected by the tragedy of his daughter’s death. However, she also noted that he appeared to be an “unreliable witness” who sought to dominate situations. The judge observed that while Mr. Winehouse is dedicated to preserving his daughter’s memory and supporting the Amy Winehouse Foundation, he is also highly sensitive to the financial interests of the family.

Following the ruling, Ms. Parry expressed relief, stating that the judgment had cleared her name after years of “deeply damaging and unfounded allegations.” She emphasized that the claim should never have been brought and that her relationship with the singer was built on genuine trust and creative collaboration. “This judgment restores the truth,” she added. “My focus is on rebuilding my life and career, and protecting my name, the work I created with Amy, and her legacy.”
