Water From Your Eyes in St. Louis

Posted: by The Alt Editing Staff

Water From Your Eyes brought their experimental art rock to St. Louis’s Old Rock House on the last weekend of September. It’s a Beautiful Place, the band’s sixth studio album, and fifth on label, this time again with Matador, leans more on Nate Amos’ guitar work and singer Rachel Brown’s lyricism, a departure from previous albums that have used heavy syncopation and dancehall inspirations.

On “Life Signs,” the album’s second track, Brown provides the band’s signature disenchanted vocals for some rather heady, sophisticated lyrics. “Sunlit, sick sky, scraped by bright-eyed, short-sight, online / For thy cathedrals are built, unbuilt, rebuilt, unwavering guilt,” Brown intones before revealing, “I’m unfulfilled, I’m in a beautiful place / Yeah, it’s so sad in this beautiful place / I need you here right now in this beautiful place.”

Amos and Brown have been making music together for almost a decade now, and show no signs of slowing down or lack of ideas. The band saved It’s a Beautiful Place’s best for last, closing out the setlist with “Playing Classics,” which leans into syncopation and keys before spinning into a dancefloor hit. Water From Your Eyes will be going overseas before returning to the U.S. to open for Haley Williams’ upcoming tour beginning in March. Here’s inside their St. Louis show:
