Social media has finally been around long enough for artists to articulate the universal desire to be understood and addiction to staying in the loop, which these algorithms exploit. Who among us hasn’t wanted to delete all traces of their online persona, only to realize they’d feel isolated without it? There’s no cure for doomscrolling or the knee-jerk urge to be an asshole other than genuine, IRL human connection. Sorry you had to hear it from me.
On Laveda’s second single from their upcoming album, Love, Darla, the NYC noise-rock quartet adorns this all-too-common phenomenon in Jacob Brooks’s sludgy guitar and Ali Genevich’s abrasive vocals. Imagine Sonic Youth became inundated with the barrage of comments from people they’ll never meet, said “fuck this shit,” and finally chose to touch some grass.
Check out the “Cellphone” video below.
Love, Darla is out September 12th on Bar/None Records. Follow Laveda on Instagram.
