Video Interview: Bodega Brings Their Book Club to the Dance Floor

On a new episode of The Popdosemagazine’s music interview show Get Involved, Nikki Belfiglio and Ben Hozie of Bodega talked to Molly Mary O’Brien about their new album Broken Equipment, which takes existential commentary for a spin on the dance floor.

There aren’t many bands out there who could turn a philosophical book club into an album of punk jams, but there also aren’t many bands out there like Bodega. The Brooklyn quintet’s third album Broken Equipment (following up 2018’s Endless Scroll and 2019’s Shiny New Model EP) was inspired by literary get-togethers led by bassist Adam See, who, when not maintaining the low end of Bodega’s grooves, teaches philosophy.

Judicious doses of Heidegger and Nietzsche influenced the songwriting, resulting in astringently groovy tunes like “Doers,” which skewers hustle culture, and “Statuette On The Console,” a song about the waste of instantly-obsolete tech products (whose video features a pillow shaped like a giant dongle).

Check out this episode of Get Involved featuring Bodega to find out what Being And Time, percussive syllables, and The Grateful Dead had to do with their recording process.

Broken Equipment is out on 3/11/2022.
