Two Door Cinema Club and Flipturn Live in Boston

The past few years, bands that were best known for their Tumblr fame over a decade ago have earned their second wind. The Postal Service just performed their biggest tour yet, The 1975 are selling out arenas, and now Two Door Cinema Club nearly sold out two legs of a U.S. tour. Maybe it’s a bit of nostalgia for when we didn’t live in a tumultuous world, but it’s mostly that Two Door Cinema Club has never felt dated and has continued to release new music.

For this second part of their U.S. tour, they were joined by flipturn who hail from Florida. flipturn has been making a name for themselves lately and arguably exist because of the era of bands Two Door Cinema Club came from. It was a change of scenery for their set as their drummer was planted right at the front of the stage and found himself constantly engaging with the crowd. Their opening set was 10 songs and they stacked the deck in their favor, playing guitar-heavy picks such as “Playground” and “Whales”, which garnered roaring applause. The moment their set ended, swarms of audience members ran to the merch table to pick up a shirt.

After settling back in their seats, it was time for Two Door Cinema Club to take the stage. Right from the jump, flashing lights that were perfectly choreographed with the band’s movements started and they kicked off their set with “This Is the Life” and “I Can Talk”. It was a total power play to pull two heavy hitters from their debut album, but the high energy continued throughout the set.

Two Door Cinema Club confirmed there is no new album in the works recently because the concept “feels very dated” but that didn’t stop them from showcasing their new song “Sure Enough”. By the time we were an hour into the show it was clear that Two Door Cinema Club was playing “Tourist History” in its entirety (but not in order) on top of pulling multiple deep cuts from their remaining discography. Whoever vocal trained Alex Trimble deserves a raise – his voice sounds on par with their recorded material even fourteen years after the release of their debut record.

After performing for 90 minutes straight, Two Door Cinema Club thanked the crowd for coming out and kicked off their last song, “What You Know”. This show was a remarkable experience and no matter what year you became a fan, it’s worth making it out to this tour because you’re going to hear everything. Remaining tickets can be found HERE and we hope to see Two Door Cinema Club back soon!
