Allegra Heart’s new single “Keep On With Rehearsin” is a disco-tinged pop track for anyone caught between who they are and who they’re told to be. Released Friday, this self-produced, -mixed, and -mastered song captures the quiet ache of repetition, the daily performance of selfhood, and the relief that comes with letting go.
Built on a steady beat and bright ’70s-inspired synths, Heart’s vocals move between clarity and hesitation, tracing the cycle of trying, failing, and trying again. “Get up, get down / keep on with rehearsin,” they sing, until the surrender starts to sound like freedom. Heart shares their inspiration for the song, “We put on our big boy pants, we go to work, we create rigid identities for ourselves, we rehearse and rehearse and rehearse. This song is about allowing ourselves to let go of rigid overidentification. Especially as a queer artist, I want to make music that touches on identity but doesn’t create more boxes.” This philosophy carries through every pulse of the track. There’s warmth in the repetition, a reminder that authenticity does not need to be polished or proven. Sometimes, just being is actually enough.
Beyond its personal message, “Keep On With Rehearsin” is also a gesture of solidarity. Heart is using the release to raise funds for families affected by ICE through the De Sol A Sol Collective, which supports people who have been detained or separated from loved ones. “Showing up in support of our local and national immigrant communities is paramount right now,” Heart says. “Families are being ripped apart with no end in sight. We have to be there for each other in times of such heavy division and intentional isolation.”
In honor of their birthday, Allegra Heart invites listeners to purchase “Keep On With Rehearsin” on Bandcamp at any price that feels accessible. All proceeds will go directly to families impacted by ICE detentions. So I urge y’all to keep on with rehearsin’, to keep on showing up. And most of all, keep on listening, because this is what community sounds like.
