Track Premiere: Great Deceivers – “Go Round”

Great Deceivers is one of those bands that I can listen to for hours and hours. Much like their contemporaries Pile and Ovlov, Great Deceivers wind themselves up into a guitar knot while spitting out paced and thoughtful lyrics, and then untangle themselves with a breakdown guitar solo. Unfortunately, unlike Pile and Ovlov, their genius so far remains largely undiscovered. For that reason and others, it appears that this self titled Great Deceivers record will be the last one. The world is like that. *sad shrug emoji*

This new track “Go Round” that we are premiering today, is a perfect example of their quality and lyrical depth. “It’s drawn on the glass, in the steam of my breath / a fading list of the reasons / it’s rubbed off from a grave with a paper and crayon, but somehow nobody wants it / and you feel cheap, look at your prospects.

Go Round is one of those songs that I always wish I was better at writing — the kind of song that just sort of falls out as a complete thought in one go. We all just sort of fell into the groove of it right away and nothing in terms of the music or parts came as a challenge which is rare for us as a band. Lyrically, I think it’s about trying to find balance between having empathy for oneself and being self-critical. Most of us have that drive inside to want to tell and hear a story about how we’re failing and messing everything up, and I think this song was an attempt to try to offer a little more tenderness in place of that, even if it’s a little bit arbitrary and comes wrapped in a veneer of sarcasm.” – Max
