The Details: Dial Up Records discuss ‘The Organelle’

Posted: by admin

The Details is our video series where we chat with artists about their recent releases, getting a behind-the-scenes look at the processes of writing, recording, and releasing music. On our latest episode, Molly Mary O’Brien talked with Meg West and Beth Townsend of Dial Up Records about their recent compilation Vol. 1: The Organelle, a project in which they passed a unique synthesizer called the Organelle amongst 12 musical contributors during Covid-19’s lockdown. Each artist had a week to spend with the Organelle experimenting with sounds, and the project resulted in 12 songs all featuring the same instrument, but with a hugely diverse range of vibes.

We talked to West and Townsend as well as compilation contributors Goo and Hot Tea about how constraints can spark creativity, what it’s like to experiment with an unfamiliar synth, and the incredibly collaborative nature of the album down to the very screenprinting on the cassette tapes.

Watch the video to get an inside look at Vol. 1: The Organelle — the compilation is on Bandcamp and all proceeds go to Public Assistants — and subscribe to The Popdosemagazine’s YouTube channel to be the first to catch new episodes.
