There’s a reason this site is called The Alternative. Our goal has always been, first and foremost, to shine a light on music we love. It doesn’t matter if a band doesn’t have a well-funded PR team behind them or even if we’re the only people covering them—all that matters is that we believe in the music. In that spirit, we present to you our 50 favorite releases of 2024. There are some you albums on here you’ve probably seen on a few other lists, and I guarantee there are a bunch you won’t find anywhere else. There’s a whole range of genres covered here, from emo to rap to hardcore to shoegaze. There’s a couple releases on here, I’m sure, that’ll you won’t like, and a few more that you won’t like are missing, and that’s fine too. But more than anything else I think these are 50 albums that only our staff would ever put on the same list together, and that’s something we’re proud of.
2024 began with the news of Pitchfork’s acquisition by GQ, with a flood of people lamenting the death of music journalism. Obviously, that hasn’t happened, but it gets harder every day, and we can’t keep running The Alt without your help. If you appreciate what we do, please consider supporting us via our Patreon. Now to begin our list. This first page is filled with our 50th to 26th favorite releases of the year, as decided by staff vote. We wish we had the time, funding, etc., to put together writeups for this entire list, but we wanted to focus on doing the best we could with our Top 25. That said, all of these records are also incredible, and it would pain us too much to leave them out.
