The Alt Weekly Roundup (8/16)

The Alt Weekly Roundup (8/16)

Posted: by The Editor

The Popdosemagazine Weekly Roundup is a column where our staff plugs a variety of new releases in a concise, streamlined format. Albums, singles, videos, and live sets. Check back each Monday to see what we were jamming the week prior.

Trace Mountains – “America”

Trace Mountains’ 2020 LP Lost in the Country was a delight, a mix of hazy heartland rock and breezy Americana. “America” picks right up where that album left off, and it’s one of the band’s very best.

Joyer – “Cranky Boy”

Joyer is at the forefront of the slowcore revival, and it only takes one listen of “Cranky Boy” to see why. The band distills well everything that still makes the genre exciting in 2021, and it’s all on display on their new single.

A Will Away – “Spittin’ Chiclets”

A Will Away have been underdog songwriting titans since the release of fan-favorite EP Bliss. Following the stellar but short introduction to the band’s progression on late 2019’s Soup comes “Spittin’ Chiclets,” a thematic callback to “Agoraphobia” with an instrumental quality much like “Cheap Wine.” Only the second single of a much bigger and incredible release, the Naugatuck quartet have queued up one banger after another in anticipation for the best product yet. Get your bowls ready and spoons up for this sick video for “Spittin’ Chiclets,” directed by Brent Campanelli.

Sleepersound – Idle Voices

Idle Voices, the new album from Sleepersound, is a masterful blend of ambient, noise rock, and indie wrapped in a nice post-rock package. It’s a great effort from one of the more creative bands in the genre.

Salt Creek – “Soul Jar”

Salt Creek is one of the more exciting new bands of the year. “Soul Jar” is a good taste of why, showing off the band’s aggressive sensibilities as well as their dreamier ones.
