The Alt Weekly Roundup (7/26)

The Popdosemagazine Weekly Roundup is a column where our staff plugs a variety of new releases in a concise, streamlined format. Albums, singles, videos, and live sets. Check back each Monday to see what we were jamming the week prior.

Baby in the 90s – Rebuilt from Memory

Sometimes you just want some good no frills rock music, and Baby in the 90s delivers on that in spades. Their style is somewhere between Animal Flag and Microwave, but feels fully formed. Rebuilt from Memory is a confident and energetic debut that, while perhaps not groundbreaking, is totally engaging.

Dim – From Dark to Light We’ll See

Dim’s singles this year have been promising, and the band’s debut From Dark to Light We’ll See makes good on those promises. It’s a wildly impressive record, owing in large part to Matt Mulkey’s absolutely soaring vocals. The rest of the band more than holds their own, though; look no further than the groove of opener “shine on me” for proof.

Gregory Uhlmann – “Goosebumps”

It only takes a cursory listen to Los Angeles-based artist Gregory Uhlmann’s music to understand how he’s composed work for places like Netflix and Vogue. However, the singer-songwriter’s solo project flaunts a gentle, contemplative nature that goes deeper than one would expect from a musician with such high profile clients. Uhlmann’s latest single, “Goosebumps,” is an art-folk track about the elasticity of time, framing introspective vocals around galloping percussion, gurgling synths, and aqueous acoustic guitars.

Nanl – Autumn Dyes

Nanl’s debut EP Autumn Dyes takes its time. Though it’s four songs never overstay their welcome, they also don’t rush to make any impressions—vocalist/guitarist/namesake Nathaniel Reed doesn’t even begin singing until nearly ninety seconds into the first song. But that approach pays off as the band’s chill, singer-songwritery style of emo is captivating from the jump.

Midwife – Luminol

If the world ends, as TS Eliot predicted, with a whimper and not a bang, Luminol might well be the soundtrack. Midwife’s new LP is positively apocalyptic, an ambient and atmospheric record that makes the most of its droning keys and faintly mumbled, repetitive lyrics; it feels at once hopelessly expansive and crushingly claustrophobic.

The Popdosemagazine’s ‘New Music Friday’ playlist

Each week our editor Lindsy Carrasquillo compiles a playlist of songs our staff has been jamming. We’ll post it on Fridays on Twitter and then include it in each edition of the ‘Weekly Roundup’ to make sure you don’t miss all of the great music we’re recommending.
