The Alt Weekly Roundup (7/15)

Posted: by The Editor

The Alternative Weekly Roundup is a column where our staff plugs a variety of new releases in a concise, streamlined format. Albums, singles, videos, and live sets. Check back each Monday to see what we were jamming the week prior.

concealer. – dissonance [all that keeps me away]

Orlando’s hardcore scene delivers again. Earlier this month newcomers concealer. unveiled their debut EP dissonance [all that keeps me away], four tracks of bracing, unyielding post-hardcore that should appeal to fans of anyone from sinema to Foreign Hands to Underoath. The five-piece has a lot of promise, and dissonance only feels like the tip of the iceberg.

Broken Record / Flesh Tape – Broken Record + Flesh Tape Split

Colorado fuzz rockers Broken Record and Flesh Tape teamed up for a new split to benefit Palestinian refugees, each contributing a new track. Broken Record’s is the rollicking, no-frills ripper “Ringer,” while Flesh Tape recorded a noise-pop version of labor activist Joe Hill’s last will.

The Maine – “Touch”

Running just shy of a year since The Maine’s self-titled dropped, the Arizona rockers are back with their newest single, “Touch.” The song acts as another installment into the band’s experimentation of sound, pressing a frenzied, electronic beat into their signature production. What results is a fast-paced, electro-rock romp that feels just as fresh as it does familiar to the group’s discography. And, with consistent releases like these, it further proves that The Maine will never be unemployed.

Macseal – Permanent Repeat

Macseal’s Super Enthusiast was a wonderful debut LP for the rising emo-pop stars, but with their new album Permanent Repeat, they’ve made their masterpiece. It’s got a lot of basking in the glow in its DNA, a lot of Happiness Hours–which is to say it’s a perfect summer LP–but Macseal aren’t just replaying other people’s hits. They’re turning in some of the best, sunniest pop rock this side of New Miserable Experience, and it’s safe to say that, while it’s warm, this record will stay on permanent rep–

Charlotte Bumgarner – “Sleepwalking”

“Sleepwalking” is the second single from Charlotte Bumgarner’s upcoming debut EP Promise, following last month’s “Never Say.” Like that song, “Sleepwalking” is a soft, strummy acoustic track filled out with piano and viola; it’s another beautiful track, and it bodes well for Promise.
