The Alternative Weekly Roundup is a column where our staff plugs a variety of new releases in a concise, streamlined format. Albums, singles, videos, and live sets. Check back each Monday to see what we were jamming the week prior.
Farseek – “Doom Scroll”
“Doom Scroll” perfects Farseek’s emo-laced pop rock, forceful and jubilant. Underneath it all there’s a sense of decay––“place our bets on never getting better”—but in the meantime, here’s something to sing along to.

nobody likes you pat – “what a good friend is for”
Saint Paul, Minnesota, artist nobody likes you pat, moniker for singer-songwriter Pat Kiloran, released his new single “what a good friend is for” and it’s a jam! With the delicate strumming of the guitar and a sing-around-the-campfire vibe, “what a good friend is for” glides effortlessly with sheer breeziness from start to finish. “what a good for is for” comes from nobody likes you pat’s forthcoming EP out this fall.

Liquid Mike – Liquid Mike
Certain segments of the internet have been gushing about Liquid Mike’s Liquid Mike. Within the first thirty or so seconds–the duration of opener “BLC”–it becomes apparent why. The Michigan foursome deals in sunny, energetic indie rock that calls to mind any number of comparisons but stands entirely on its own. Sure, it’s a record preoccupied with the mundanity of everyday life: “Fifty-six hours every seven days / did you see this coming when you graduated?”; “maybe I’ve been sitting here too long / maybe I’ve been waiting for a change”; “a the DMV everybody’s complaining / about how they’re so behind / and I’m waiting in a very long line / that’s life.” But for eighteen minutes, anything feels possible again.

Mise En Scene – “Reality Bites”
“Reality bites, and it hurts every time.” Ain’t that the truth? Mise En Scene has given us a teaser with their newest song, “Reality Bites” off their upcoming EP titled, well, Reality Bites! With signature swagger, vocalist/guitarist Stefanie Blondal-Johnson and drummer Jodi Dunlop take things that hurt and deliver a song that’ll inspire you!

Lu Lagoon – When Birds Fly West
On Lu Lagoon’s latest When Birds Fly West, the Colorado project crafts a spectral, sweltering batch of indie folk tunes. These songs are packed to the gills, stuffed with violin, cello, bagpipes, gong—you name it. It all comes to a head at the end of the closing title track, when the band picks up the pace and the record ends with life-affirming fervor.

Gabbo – “Who Else”
Gabbo’s new track “Who Else” is a melancholic self-affirmation and a perfect lead single for their debut album dropping May 5th. The track blends Gabbo’s trademark ethereal vocals, corporeal lyrics, and manifesting instrumental to accomplish a unique sound characteristic of Gabbo’s previous work. The singer details their process for the song: “i was listening exclusively to arthur russell and sung tongs. a lot of traumatic personal shit was happening, and i needed someone to talk to. kyle sandhoff did an amazing job with the video, and i got amazing group vocals from dead selves, synae, madxsen, love and other emotions, and saint agatha.”

Gumm – “Slogan Machine”
On “Slogan Machine,” the title track from their upcoming LP on Convulse, Gumm turns their ire toward pseudo-progressives who criticize others without looking inward or seeking to build coalitions. It’s a barn burner and, paired with the other singles from Slogan Machine, suggests it’ll be one of the best hardcore albums of 2023.
