Born Without Bones – NYE
Born Without Bones’ NYE EP finds them covering Motion City Soundtrack, The Zombies, and Death Cab for Cutie, three inimitable acts. Thankfully, the Massachusetts three-piece is up to the task, making each song wholly their own.

The Homeless Gospel Choir / Teenage Halloween – Split
Punk fans got a treat to start the new year with a fantastic new split from The Homeless Gospel Choir and Teenage Halloween released Saturday. The Homeless Gospel Choir continues to expand their sound, getting bigger — but also more nuanced — with each release, and “Harrisburg Shoes” and “Pittsburgh Shoes” both sound great, stretching into new territories, including a clever lyrical nod to “Lost in the Supermarket” and even a kazoo choir at one point. Teenage Halloween sound killer here too, with both tracks carrying a frantic pace and pointed lyrics like “the only thing thing that trickles down is generational trauma” and “if they cared about their people / being rich would be illegal” in “Floating” or the sentiment of “don’t really wanna teach a gender studies class / in every conversation I have” in “Burn.”

Barely March – “When December Comes to Town”
It might not be so seasonally appropriate anymore, but Barely March’s “When December Comes to Town” sure is still a ripper. It’s the best kind of Christmas song — the kind that’s also just a straight up good song.

Life – Demo Five
The word busy sometimes gets applied too generously to certain songwriters but for Damián Antón Ojeda it is actually true. Under his black metal project Sadness, he’s accrued quite a catalog that is way too long to list here. And his work doesn’t end with that one project, using the moniker Life to delve into the chaotic world of screamo. Each release is simply called a demo and we’ve now reached the fifth installment. Thankfully it doesn’t disappoint and is a wonderful addition to an already lengthy discography.

Bogues – “25-31”
Bogues’ music has always suited winter well, and “25-31” is no exception. The sparse track really underscores how far the singer-songwriter has come in the last six years.
