Song Premiere: Safari Room – “Blunderbuss”

Posted: by The Editor

Much of Safari Room’s “Blunderbuss” finds the guitars taking the sideline, allowing the song’s smoke-filled atmosphere to come from the intense-but-melodic bassline and sparse-but-intricate percussion. The empty space in the tune contrasts with the crowded club scene of the song’s narrative, as bandleader Alec Koukol wanders through the nights, looking for a “fire escape” or “someone to hold.”

Koukol describes “Blunderbuss” as “detailing the push and pull of hook-up culture and learning what we all want through brief encounters,” adding that the track “discusses the alluring nature of going home with someone at the end of the night. But it then begs the questions: Is it the right call or is it just temporarily filling a void? Is it all going to blow up in my face? At the end of the day, all we want is to be loved, and it’s fascinating to think we can convince ourselves that a stranger we connect with beneath the disco ball could be someone in which we can share the rest of our lives.”
