I’m not gonna say it. You saw the headline, you were thinking it, you were waiting for me to say it–I’m not gonna. What I’m gonna say instead is that Hit, a four-piece from New York, deal in jangly, ’60s-sounding indie pop, the sort built on fluttery vocal runs and exuberant riffs. If you know Harm’s Way will make your year-end list, or if you love the idea of 2nd Grade rocking a little harder, allow me to introduce you to Hit. More specifically, allow me to introduce you to their new single “The Spot,” which we’re premiering today before it goes up on DSPs Friday.
“The Spot” is the kind of song you could describe as a romp, nearly four minutes that feel like they fly by in less than two, a whirlwind of bouncy riffs and hook after hook after hook; the riffs here are just as infectious as the vocal melodies, and when that feathery chorus lands, it lands gracefully. It’s the lead single off the band’s upcoming LP Bestseller, out at the end of October on their own One Weird Trick label.
Hit vocalist/guitarist Craig Heed shares:
The video was inspired by all those art process reels you see on Instagram, where it’s someone making a painting, and you’re not sure what it’s gonna be. It feels like watching an episode of HowStuffWorks, and then the end result is just some kitschy portrait. I thought it’d be cool to basically just make a mess, where the gestures follow the rhythms of the music, and the colors match the visuals the song evokes.
My original demo of “The Spot” didn’t have the dissonant bridge; we developed that as a band. It’s emblematic of how our music evolved over the course of recording this album, away from paisley jangly stuff and towards abrasive noise. The decision to abruptly drop back into that last chorus was cribbed from “Magic Carpet Ride” by Steppenwolf.
Check out “The Spot” below.
Bestseller is out October 25th.
