In every promotional picture that exists of Coaster, the Utrecht-based duo of Bart Appel and Paul Dijkman, they’re standing in the woods. It’s an appropriate backdrop for their naturalistic sound, a dusky, folksy strand of slowcore as indebted to Alex G as it is to Horse Jumper of Love. On their 2021 EP Nothing Contagious, the partnership adopted a lusher, breathier style of indie rock, closer to dream pop than the sparse, lived-in slowcore they turn in on their new single “Nights.” Nothing Contagious was a great EP, one that sits comfortably between Wild Nothing and Alvvays, but “Nights” pulls them in a different direction and highlights other strengths. It’s very possibly the band’s best cut to date.
We’re excited to bring you an exclusive premiere of the track, their first release in two years. They share that the goal of the new single was to “illuminate the intriguing divergence of perceptions between individuals” and to “explore the ephemeral nature of moments.” Check out the gorgeous single below.
