Dan Bejar isn’t trying to prove himself to anyone. Since the mid-’90s, he’s bounced between various indie rock bands, notably the New Pornographers and Swan Lake, all while juggling his own project as Destroyer. Twenty years into his career while touring for Destroyer’s fourteenth album Dan’s Boogie, it’s clear he runs this shit like the navy.
Accompanied by two guitarists, a bassist, trumpeter, drummer, and keys player transformed each song into a symphony—the swaggering funk on “Suicide Demo for Kara Walker” or wailing trumpet on “The Same Thing as Nothing at All.” Bejar remained fixed in the center. His casual lean against the microphone stand, tousled grey curls, and droopy button down signal the self-assurance and ease that only a career musician can possess.
