It’s been a long winter, snowy and icy, but at least we have some killer live shows to look forward to. The Seahaven, Flycatcher, and Spin show was no exception, three great bands played at the Foundry in Philadelphia on Thursday, February 5th.
Spin opened up the show. A newer indie rock/emo band from New York City, they have only 4 songs out so far (all released last year). They had a nice guitar tone and reminded me a bit of Turnover in their moody instrumentation. They played each song that they have released and a few new songs too.
Up next was Flycatcher, a terrific four-piece band based in New Jersey. They dropped their debut album Wrench on Memory Music, famed producer Will Yip’s label, in October of last year, and played most of it last night. They had great energy and had been on tour with Seahaven for a few weeks at this point. Some highlights were “Brother” and opening track “Fault Line.”
Headlining the show was Seahaven, an emo / post-hardcore band from Torrance, California. They released an album in 2011, Winter Forever, which turns 15 years old this year. They played this iconic album in full last night. Most songs were heavier and they played in the dark with some intermittent flashes of light. They projected ‘Seahaven Winter Forever’ on the backdrop of the stage.
To play the quieter acoustic song “Honeybee,” the rest of the band stepped off the stage and frontman Kyle Soto played solo. You could hear a pin drop in the room. It was a respectful audience and everyone paid attention. In addition to the Winter Forever album, they played a handful of other songs, including their newest single “Long Goodbye,” released about a month ago. This was a great show and I’m excited to see what comes next for all three of these bands.
