Photography + Review: Tyler the Creator, Kali Uchis, Vince Staples, Teezo Touchdown

If there’s one thing that’s true about Tyler the Creator…it’s that he’s a creator. Whether it’s a new sound, new character, or new lifestyle move, he is always crafting a unique vision that suits him. Trying to draw a straight line from his beginnings to his latest effort, Call Me If You Get Lost, would not be possible, but he has managed to captivate the “Play Yonkers” crowd with each new album while successfully drawing new crowds. After the floral era of Flower Boy, the suit and wig era of Igor, we’ve arrived in his newest era, feeling reminiscent of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” but with his special Tyler twists to it.

To kick off the show, Teezo Touchdown’s “Heavy Metal Only” comedy bit took hold of the crowd with a musical Home Improvement-style performance. To end his set, he gave out a metal hardhat to the loudest person in the crowd before making way for Vince Staples. Staples took on the responsibility of getting people on all sides of the sold out arena excited. Debuting songs live from his self-titled release in 2021 all the way back to his hit “Norf Norf,” he successfully engaged the crowd of those who knew him and newcomers before bowing out to allow Kali Uchis on stage. Kali Uchis’ mesmerizing, immaculately choreographed set hypnotized the crowd for an hour and got everyone ready for to welcome Tyler. Right as 10pm rolled around, he lifted himself to the stage in the backseat of a Rolls Royce (which later became a haggling point with an audience member) and stepped out to unveil a two story house as his backdrop. Diving headfirst into the set with four brand new tracks, fans were already out of their seats screaming along. Before jumping into “Lumberjack”, he went back and forth with the crowd of nearly 15,000 people about how to successfully pronounce the ridiculously spelled Worcester (see: WUH-STER, and yes, he did initially say “Boston.”). After showing the crowd he still has that carefree, comedic side we all fell in love with, he hopped into his prop boat to move to the stage formerly occupied by Vince Staples. From this point on, he dove deeper into his discography to prove this set truly had something for everyone.
