MUNA has taken over the world in the past few years (dare we say MUNA Saves the World?) and show no signs of stopping soon. After their 2019 release Saves the World, MUNA begin selling out venues across the country – they even opened for The 1975 in late 2019. Fast forwarding through the pandemic, MUNA then released the single “Silk Chiffon” (featuring Phoebe Bridgers) on Phoebe Bridgers’ label “Saddest Factory” in 2021. “Life’s so fun/life’s so fun” instantly became the millennial and gen-z anthem.
Now with the release of their self titled 2022 album, MUNA are embarking on a sold out U.S. tour including a stop at Boston’s Roadrunner this past weekend. 3,500 attendees lined up for doors before rushing to the barricade or the merch table.
Opening for MUNA this tour was Nova Twins, a funk/electronic/punk group led by Amy Love and Georgia South. We were floored by their performance. The duo came out and jammed away with the creation of sounds assisted by massive pedalboards. On top of unique live sounds, they also showed us our first twerk pit and had the attendance partake in that instead of moshing.
After a 45 minute set from Nova Twins, MUNA took the stage and jumped right into “What I Want”. In seconds the whole audience was dancing and singing along. Putting “Number One Fan” at track two in their set was a bold move but hit especially hard after the isolation of the past few years. While their last tour mostly featured Saves the World and MUNA, this tour breathed new life into a large section of songs from their debut album About U. The mega hit “I Know a Place” was played along with other favorites such as “Around U”, “Crying on the Bathroom Floor”, and “So Special”. MUNA even brought out a special guest for “Anything But Me”: two inflatable horses to accompany the opening line “You’re gonna say I’m on a high horse /I think that my horse is regular size”. Just after the 90 minute mark, MUNA wrapped up their set with “One That Got Away” and walked off stage for a brief interlude, returning with their indie-rock hit “Silk Chiffon” as their encore.
While we’d usually say “grab tickets while you still can”, this tour is fully sold out! Keep your eyes peeled as we’re sure they’ll be back soon, especially after their opening slot for Taylor Swift this spring.
