5 Seconds of Summer are making their way around the United States this summer with support from Meet Me @ The Altar and recently made a two night stop in Boston.
We caught night two’s sold out show, which kicked off with a 30 minute set from Meet Me @ The Altar. On top of squeezing in as much original music as they could, they still set aside time to cover Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone” and Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated”.
This tour is unique in that it is designed in the style of a late night TV show, appropriately titled “The 5 Seconds of Summer Show”. Promptly walking on stage at 9pm, 5 Second of Summer played a mock TV show opening introducing us to our “hosts” with a picture of each member. To kick off their set, we heard “Bad Omens”, “2011”, and “Caramel”. As the band started to loosen up, each member was seen walking on top of their rack of guitar cabs allowing them to take in the sold out crowd in front of them. Despite releasing their newest album 5SOS5 last year, 5 Seconds of Summer dug deep into their discography and pulled out a slew of fan favorites from each release. In the middle of their 28 song setlist, they rolled an inflatable dice that decided between two songs to play. The winner of tonight’s dice roll was “English Love Affair” which marked the live debut of this song. With one final push, the band continued to command the stage with “Teeth”, “Jet Black Heart”, and “She Looks So Perfect”. It was time for 5 Seconds of Summer to wrap their set up, but the thunderous applause led them back to the stage for an encore. They ended the show with both “Outer Space” and “Youngblood”. Despite many stylistic changes over their career, “The 5 Seconds of Summer Show” tour shows they can still deliver a set that satisfies both new and lifelong fans. We are excited to see what the future holds for them after this. Until then, you can check out the pictures from their second night in Boston that our photographer Kyle took!
