Sports media personality Pat McAfee is celebrating the arrival of his newborn son, Midas Robert McAfee, following a delivery that was significantly more complex and alarming than the public initially realized. On Monday, May 25, McAfee shared the details of a high-risk pregnancy that culminated in an emergency surgical procedure and a subsequent stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Emergency Medical Complications
According to a detailed statement released by McAfee, his wife, Samantha, developed severe preeclampsia during the final stages of her pregnancy. This serious blood pressure condition led medical professionals to perform an emergency C-section on the evening of Friday, May 22. Midas Robert McAfee entered the world at 10:42 p.m., weighing 6 pounds, 6 ounces.
McAfee described his son as a “screaming young legend” with a full head of hair, but admitted that the atmosphere behind the scenes was heavy with concern as the medical team worked to stabilize both mother and child.

The NICU Experience
Because Midas was delivered at 36 weeks, he was considered slightly premature. This necessitated an immediate transfer to the NICU to assist with his lung development and transition to life outside the womb. McAfee candidly described the emotional toll of seeing his newborn connected to a CPAP machine and a feeding tube within a heated pod. “It is a bit scary to see your baby hooked up to so many very serious things,” he admitted.
While Samantha recovered from the major surgery, McAfee managed the difficult task of supporting his wife while monitoring their son’s progress. He praised his son’s resilience, characterizing the infant as a “fighter” throughout the 36-hour ordeal. Thankfully, the family has since been reunited, and they are preparing to introduce Midas to his big sister, Mackenzie.
Unique Baby Names in the Spotlight
The McAfee family joins a long list of public figures who have chosen distinctive names for their children. In the world of country music and entertainment, creativity often extends to the nursery, with artists selecting names that carry deep personal or lyrical significance.
For instance, Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman chose the name Sunday Rose for their first daughter, a name that evokes a sense of peace. As the McAfee family settles in with baby Midas, they join a community of parents who celebrate both the unique identities of their children and the harrowing journeys sometimes required to bring them home.
